The group was established in Fall 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic by Dr. Nafa and a group of Computer Science students at Salem State University.
The group has participated in the Massachusetts Undergraduate Research Conference and has had formal papers accepted for publication at 8th International Conference on Bioinformatics & Biosciences (BIOS 2022) October 29 ~ 30, 2022, Vienna, Austria, marking the first time Computer Science students Salem State University have had papers published online.

To join the Data Science undergraduate research group, send an email expressing your interest in topics such as Data Science, AI, Machine Learning, Semantic Computing, and Web Programming to Dr. Nafa at
. Upon receipt of your email, you will receive a welcome message and be introduced to the group members. New members are required to complete a tutorial during their first semester, based on their learning pace. After mastering the basics, members are free to choose a research topic or join a team. The group meets weekly to present progress on research projects, with members who have been with the group for at least two semesters.

Research Group Policy
Here is the policy for the Data Science undergraduate research group:
Membership: Undergraduate students from all majors and class years are welcome to join the research group by sending en email to Dr. Nafa at fnafa@salemstate.edu
Meetings: The research group will meet each other week at a consistent time and location. Meetings will be led by the group's faculty advisor and may include presentations by members, discussions of current research projects, and brainstorming sessions.
Attendance: Regular attendance at meetings is expected of all members. If a member is unable to attend a meeting, they should inform the faculty advisor in advance.
Research projects: Members may propose and lead their own research projects or contribute to ongoing projects within the group. All research projects must be approved by the faculty advisor before they can begin.
Funding: The research group may apply for grants or funding to support its activities. Any funding received will be used to cover research-related expenses, such as materials or travel.
Confidentiality: Research group members must maintain the confidentiality of all research projects and discussions within the group.
Communication: The research group will use a designated online platform, such as a group email or Slack channel, for communication and organization.
Termination of membership: Membership in the research group may be terminated at the discretion of the faculty advisor for noncompliance with group policies or failure to meet expectations.
